If there ever was an intimidating piece of produce it’s the butternut squash.

It’s odd shape, tough skin and size drive people right into the arms of the pre-cut, packaged squash. Also – did you know squash is technically a fruit? I just learned this and I blame restaurants offering up squash in their mixed vegetable medleys for my many years ignorant to the true essence of squash!

Chopping and slicing  is something I usually find relaxing because of the repetitive rhythm. But cutting up a butternut squash can sometimes feel more like trying to saw through a log (especially if you do not have the right knife). It is worth your effort, I promise you cannot beat the fresh taste you get when you cut up your own! With the right technique and knife I promise it can be a simple and smooth operation. Follow these steps to master the art of cubing a butternut squash and please watch your fingers! Make sure you have a sharp knife and you are using a stable surface for cutting. Now throw on your favorite song and start cubing!

First you want to peel the squash while it’s whole. It’s a lot easier than peeling it after you cut it in half or smaller. Then chop it in half where the thinner part meets the rounder more bulbous part. Now cut off the stub at the very top and the very bottom.

Now cut the longer half in half lengthwise. Place it on the round smaller surface so it is stable when you cut it. Once its cut place  each half face down. Time to cube!

Make slices across vertically and then across horizontally to form approximate  one inch cubes.  Set aside.

Now cut the other rounder half of the squash in half and scoop out the seeds. A small melon baller works great.

Once that is done you want to put face down and again cut horizontally and vertically until you form one inch cubes.

Hopefully you  are now admirably gazing upon your beautiful orange cubes of squash with a sense of satisfaction and a couple missing fingers (just kidding!). It can be a lot of work until you get the hang of it but well worth it because butternut squash is delicious! Do you have any good tips to help while cutting and cubing a butternut squash?
